Go away, first entry...

Mon Nov 13, 2006, 3:25 AM
I'm only really posting this because I got sick of seeing my first and only journal post on my main dA page every time I logged in. =)

Despite my declared intentions, I never did find a Chosen Artist to hire through dA - I actually ended up getting back in touch with my previous graphic designer who was more than happy to resume working with me. Also, with the exception of that one silly poem I posted after I read one of Jakkar's recent poems, I haven't been using my dA account to post much of my old angsty teen drivel either... actually I've only really used it so far to post the occasional snapshot I've taken with my Canon S2 IS that I thought was interesting-looking enough to merit sharing with others. So, there you go. The best laid plans of mice and men, eh?

Anyways, I'm not much of a "blogger". Hope you like the pics so far though.

I'll not post six seperant identical compliments nor favour one above the others with the attention, so here instead shall I say that the Inferno and Satisfaction series really are rather good *grins*

I've had little luck getting good shots of flames, but I've never tried too hard. A camera with a few more manual adjustment options on it would help... Nice work there.

The combination of colours, the timing and the directions shadows are cast make Satisfaction very.. Satisfying. But for the blurry third one.

Mine certainly isn't quite that bad, and what shortcomings it does have, I'm fairly certain are just the result of my lack of knowledge about the device, rather than any fault of the camera itself. I'm sure if I took the time to actually learn something about the camera's operation, or about photography (heh!), I'd eliminate 9/10 problems I have with it. =)

Tip I recently figured in photography class:

Portrait mode reduces depth of field. If you want a focus all on the same plane before you, use portrait, and what is before or beyond the target will be blurred.

Landscape has the highest depth of field, focusing on everything it can at once.

I never knew of those two. The manuals are useless.

Hmmm, that rings of something I knew about photography back from my film days, but had either forgotten, or didn't think to apply to digital photography - or, most likely, both. Thanks for the reminder though, I'll have to have a play with those soon.

What's bugging me the most, is that I can't seem to get my macro feature happening. The S2 IS boasts a 0mm macro function - you can in theory photograph something that is literally touching the lens - but if I try to get any closer than a few feet to something, the bastard won't focus anymore, and I haven't worked out how to force focus in macro mode, or use a manual focus. Argh.

I find that Macro functions best at around 14-9 inches from the target, while super-macro works best at 5-2 inches.
